UNICEF Children’s Busses used to conduct activities in Iwate Prefecture.

During Golden Week the Japan Committee for UNICEF (JCU) implemented UNICEF Children’s Bus Fieldtrips for children living in the coastal areas of Iwate Prefecture as part of its efforts to extend psychological care for the children in the disaster area. Over the course of five days, nearly 1,000 children and parents from the disaster area participated in these fieldtrips.

Dr. Tadashi Yasuda, who was dispatched from the UNICEF Vietnam Office and serves as the Iwate Field Manager for the JCU Emergency Assistance Headquarters, commented that, “A large number of people have expressed their gratitude for this effort, telling me, ‘This was a huge help as the tsunami washed away our family car, and I thought I wouldn’t be able to take the children anywhere this year.’”

As a second installment of these efforts, JCU Fukushima this month started the “Let’s Play! The Outdoors Playtime Project” with the cooperation of Fukushima Junior Chambet International, Fukushima Transportation and Fukushima Transportation and Tourism and the assistance of Fukushima City, the Board of Education and the Fukushima Association of Kindergartens. Under this project, children from preschools and kindergartens in Fukushima City are invited to come and play freely in a safe environment.
