UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake took the time yesterday afternoon between his meetings to visit the Japan Committee for UNICEF (JCU) Great East Japan Earthquake Emergency Assistance Headquarters to attend the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Follow-up Meeting on 2-3 June in Tokyo.
Executive Director Lake received an explanation from Emergency Assistance Headquarters Program Coordinator Yutaka Kikugawa on the current situation of emergency assistance activities and other issues. Mr. Kikugawa emphasized that assistance has been made possible through the cooperation of co-ops, corporations such as AEON, as well as through a cooperative relationship with and network of schools that have supported UNICEF fundraising for many years.

Mr. Lake commented that, “Everyone at UNICEF New York Headquarters is astonished by the hard work of JCU. The role of national committees is not to implement this type of emergency assistance, but to conduct fundraising, public relations and advocacy for UNICEF. I am amazed that JCU, one of UNICEF’s national committees, has been able to carry out such an extensive campaign of focused activities, just like UNICEF offices do in developing countries.”

He continued, “On my trip I have learned that co-ops, schools, corporations and others all came together to assist the work of JCU. I would like to directly thank everyone for your generosity and cooperation.”
After the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Follow-up Meeting, Mr. Lake is scheduled to visit the disaster-stricken coastal area of Miyagi Prefecture on 4 June together with UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Tetsuko Kuroyanagi and JCU Ambassador Agnes Chan.
