The Iwate Prefecture Inter-High School Athletic Competition was held in May with assistance from the Japan Committee for UNICEF. |
The Japan Committee for UNICEF (JCU) has provided assistance for the 58th Iwate Prefecture Inter-Junior High School Athletic Competition so that junior high school students in Iwate Prefecture’s disaster-stricken coastal areas have the same opportunity as other junior high school students to qualify for the national competition and have an equal opportunity to demonstrate the fruits of their training.
This prefectural competition serves as the preliminary round for student athletes that want a ticket to the national-level competition. After the disaster, however, it did not look like schools in the coastal areas where damage was severe would be able to participate. After receiving requests from the Iwate Prefecture Board of Education and the Iwate Prefecture Junior High School Athletics Federation, JCU made the decision to provide assistance in order to fulfill the dreams of children striving to participate in this event. The event will also serve as a form of psychosocial assistance for children in addition to being a source of positive news in the disaster area.
During the span of the competition, JCU called on five world-class athletes to come and support the children.
