The Japan Committee for UNICEF (JCU) has responded to the requests of 10 cities and 4 towns in Miyagi Prefecture that were damaged by the 11 March earthquake and tsunami or that are receiving disaster victims, by assisting the full-fledged restart of maternal and child health services conducted by local municipal governments in those cities and towns.
Nearly three months have passed since the earthquake. Nevertheless, an adequate assessment has yet to be conducted on the nutrition, growth and development, and mental health of small children forced to live as evacuees away from their homes in the disaster area. In light of these circumstances, it is urgent that local governments restart maternal and child health services including infant checkups and vaccinations. In addition to cars and mopeds to use as transportation by health staff in the area, JCU has provided health officials in the disaster area with height and weight scales, examination tables and vaccine refrigerators to replace those either washed away or broken in the tsunami.
Thanks to these efforts, on 22 March, Onagawa Town was the first of 14 cities and towns in Miyagi Prefecture to restart maternal and child health services. Infant checkups and other services have also commenced in Kesennuma City, Minamisanriku Town, Tagajo City, Tome City, Ishinomaki City and Iwanuma City.
