Under the Tegami Project (“tegemi” is Japanese for “letter”) messages of support and encouragement from children around the world are being delivered to children in the Tohoku region. For Phase 2 of the project, letters from children in Afghanistan were delivered to children at Yumoto High School in Fukushima Prefecture.

Yumoto High School’s school building was badly damaged in the earthquake, and students have been forced to attend classes at a space created for them at Iwaki Meisei Univesity. It was Yuji Teketomo from the UNICEF Afghanistan Office that delivered the letters to the students. First, Mr. Taketomo gave a lecture about Afghanistan. He opened his lecture by commenting, “Actually, Afghanistan is Japan’s next-next-door neighbor.” He immediately acquired the students’ attention. Mr. Taketomo provided an overview of the country, and while discussing the relationship between Japan and Afghanistan he showed pictures of schools built through assistance from Japan that bore both the Afghan and Japanese flags. The students appeared moved.

Mr. Taketomo also discussed his work as a procurement specialist at the Afghanistan Office and the efforts being carried out to ensure children’s rights. The students were enthralled by the experience and were frequently heard saying such things as “Really? I didn’t know that,” and “I had no idea.” The students learned greetings in Dari and Pashto, the official languages of Afghanistan, and were taught about the country’s culture. They were even able to taste dates that are eaten in Afghanistan during the Ramadan season.

Next, they opened the letters. The children began to cheer as Mr. Taketomo handed over the box with the letters in it. Everyone gathered around the teacher’s desk and opened it together. As Mr. Taketomo and JCU staff handed each letter to individual students, they began to carefully read them. Quotes from several of the letters have been included below.

“Even though my country is at war, I still go to school and stay positive. I hope that you all will be brave and strong, too. I pray that everyone in Japan gets better soon, that your towns quickly recover, and that everyone can live comfortable and peaceful lives.” “It pains me to think of what happened in Japan. The people of Afghanistan pray that our friends in Japan are able to return to school and are safe. I hope that your futures are bright and filled with hope.”

“Japan has provided Afghanistan with a lot of support. Thank you for building us schools and hospitals. I want to do something for you all, too.”

Afterwards the students gathered for a group photo, where they all smiled as they yelled “thank you” in a local Afghani dialect. The students were assigned to develop ideas to reply to the Afghani school children over the weekend, and will be writing them at a later date in class.
