The Japan Committee for UNICEF (JCU) has provided Child Friendly Spaces for children living as evacuees in the affected areas. In past reports, JCU has introduced stories of children enjoying Early Childhood Development Kits and Recreation Kits. This initiative, which was launched with the objective of promoting psychosocial care for children, has received the support of countless individuals and been expanded to other affected areas.
At a community space set up within temporary housing in Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture, JCU watched as children had fun playing with books and toys donated by JCU.

Kazuki Habano, a sophomore at Toyo University who has been visiting as a volunteer, commented that, “I have been coming as a volunteer every other week starting 1 August and will continue until the end of September. Before entering the affected area, I had planned to be helping primary and junior high school students staying in temporary housing with their homework, but after I actually arrived I was surprised to see the tremendously large amount of children younger than school age. It is easy to communicate with primary and junior high school students, but it is much more difficult to talk with children too young to go to school. But the books and toys provided as assistance by UNICEF were immensely useful in helping children open up. While using the toys to communicate with the children, it made me so happy when there was a child that would remember my name.”

A mother of a three-year-old girl looked relieved as she told us, “Temporary housing areas have no parks or other play areas, so we are extremely grateful for this community space. Also, there is such a diverse range of people that have come together at these temporary housing areas, and we didn’t know anyone else. But that’s when I heard about the community space, and when I came I was able to meet a lot of other mothers with the same worries. Now I exchange emails regularly with the other mothers that I have met here about where relief supplies are to be distributed and information about events. There are a lot of toys here and a lot of children around the same age. While my daughter has fun playing, I am able to enjoy talking with the other mothers and relieve some stress of my own.”
Meanwhile, we also met a mother that commented, “My child regularly plays pretend games about tsunamis, and if a truck is coming she will ask, ‘Mommy, is that truck carrying rubble?’ This makes me worry a lot about what form these thoughts are going to take in the future, and when she asks me these questions I have trouble responding.”

The Japan Committee for UNICEF works together with local governments, boards of education, and schools that have supported UNICEF activities for many years, as well as local organizations and groups with which JCU has agreements for the construction and operation of Child Friendly Spaces. JCU provides assistance activities for children by coordinating with local governments and promotes cooperation with other organizations in order to extend the most support possible to children in the affected areas. JCU exerts every effort to ensuring that as many children as possible are able to return to healthy and safe environments as quickly as possibly by extensively sharing the knowledge of JCU and UNICEF, including tools such as Early Childhood Development Kits and Recreation Kits as well as operating Child Friendly Spaces.
